I read the last 2 chapters of Philippians today, and chapter 4, verses 12 & 13 run counter to all the advertising out there, but provide a healthier, more stress-free way of living. "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. / I can do everything through him who gives me strength." Whereas every commercial out there is based on the idea of us not being content with our current situation, God knows that a new car, a new pair of shoes, a new game won't satisfy the hunger of our soul. Only the strength that God gives will last us through every stage of life, day in and day out. Although I don't believe it's sinful to enjoy the things God has blessed us with in life, I don't want to be consumed by them, I want them all to point me right back to the source. Anything that gets in the way of that focus on God and tries to take His place, offering satisfaction of that deeper need that only He can fill, is a voice of chaos and confusion and needs to be put in its place beneath the only sufficient source of hope, joy and contentment, God Himself.
