Today I went through 2 Thessalonians, and the one verse I want to focus on today is chapter 3, verse 13: "...never tire of doing what is right." I don't think this is saying we should never get tired while doing right, I think it's warning against the kind of burnout that fosters an attitude of "I've done my bit and I'm tired. I'm just going to ignore what needs to be done for awhile. Let someone else shoulder the burden for a change!" The problem with this attitude is not that we get tired, it's what we do with that tiredness, and how we interpret it. We can take it on ourselves to shove everything aside, and make some semblance of peace for ourselves, but that ignores God's promises, our responsibility within the body, and the blessings that God wants to give us as we serve Him, as well as the character He is building in us. The better alternative is to give that tiredness to God, and ask Him what He wants to do with us, and what He wants to grow in us. This way leads to the fulfilment of chapter 3, verse 16: "Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all." I know that the peace I gain myself is short-lived and hollow, whereas His peace is real, and stands up to scrutiny. I'd rather have His peace, wouldn't you?
