Today I read the other 6 letters to the churches in Revelation 2:8 - 3:22. From the letter to Smyrna, I'm reminded to be faithful at all costs, and not to fear suffering. From the letter to Thyatira, I'm reminded to hold onto purity at all costs, and that God knows my heart and mind. From the letter to Sardis, I'm reminded that reputation is nothing. It's more important to do the right thing than to look like I'm doing the right thing. From the church in Philadelphia's letter, I'm reminded that no one can take away opportunities that God gives, also that following their example I don't need to have much strength to obey God and be faithful to Him. From the letter to Laodicea, I'm reminded how little earthly goods matter. When it says that He knows their deeds, that they're neither hot nor cold, I wonder if that's saying they're useless because they won't turn their hands to one thing or another that God is doing? He works in many different ways, but if I refuse to actually participate in any of them, if I just take the path of least resistance and most comfort, am I being just as lukewarm and therefore useless to God? As a godly man, I need to allow God to use me wherever He wants to, which might be quite different at different times.
Another thing I noticed about the letters in general is that Jesus reveals a different aspect of Himself to each church, as well as a different reward for overcoming, tailored to each church's situation and need. To me that indicates that Jesus will reveal Himself to me in the way that I most need Him to, and not necessarily the same way as He does to someone else - but always in keeping with His character. Also, community is important because I can learn more of His revealed character from others, and share what He has revealed to me.
God, may I always walk with You. Please reveal to me the aspects of Your nature that I most need, and reveal who You have called me to be as well. God, thank you that You reward those who earnestly seek You. I often feel that any reward is superfluous, that Your presence should be enough for me, but it occurs to me that any gift or reward from You is also worth getting excited about, because it comes from You, and because You know how to give the best gifts. May I freely give as You have freely given to me. May Your Name be glorified by my words and deeds. Amen.
