Pastor Kip's message today was entitled 'One Thing'. Considering the feeling at the beginning of a new year, of new beginnings, fresh starts and resolutions, he wanted us to consider certain questions when thinking about what to change from a godly perspective. I'll include those questions, and for my personal benefit I'll place my answers here so I can keep them in mind.
1. What one thing do you desire from God? - Psalm 27:4
I most desire to know, understand and share in the heart of God, to have my heart become more like His.
2. What one thing are you lacking with God? - Mark 10:21-22
I need to let Him have control over my time and what I do with it, giving up my 'right' to that control.
3. What one thing do you need to let go of? - Philippians 3:13-14; Isaiah 43:18-19; Matthew 6:33
I'm pretty sure I need to let go of my fear of loneliness, and trust that God has a plan, and will work things out in my life as He sees best.
4. What one promise do you need to claim? - Psalm 56:9-11
In keeping with my feelings that God has something new coming up soon in my life, and my hope that He will reveal what it is to me, one of the verses that Pastor Kip mentioned, Psalm 32:8, is what I'm trusting God to fulfill in my life. The promise is that He is guiding, teaching, leading, and watching over me.
These are just my own answers to the questions. Others will, on careful consideration, have other things that fit their current circumstances and become their answers. Kip's challenge to apply these answers is a 4 step process:
1) Choose one 'God Idea' to focus on this year.
2) Write it down and put it somewhere you'll see it.
3) Determine what you need to do about it. (your part)
4) Pray and thank God every day for His involvement in this area.
I challenge everyone to seriously consider how they might answer these questions, and how they can become more like the person God has called them to be.
