I continued reading up to Job 9 today, and after sitting quietly with him for a week, they decided to try to help him. Unfortunately, not knowing what was going on behind the scenes, their help turned out to be not so helpful. The friends who Job expects to offer comfort in his distress try to comfort him by telling him what he needed to change, whether it was true or not. Maybe if they had asked God what he needed to hear, they would have come across as more comforting. I need to make sure that I look for God's wisdom rather than my own before trying to help someone. He will know best what they need to hear, and how to speak the truth in love.
